Yost Fulton started his training in Budo Taijutsu in the early 80's, and moved to Japan as an exchange student to learn Japanese & train with Hatsumi soke in 1989. After graduating college, he moved back to Japan for work. He lived there for over 6 years, training primarily with Hatsumi soke and Nagato sensei. Living in Japan & being fluent in Japanese have given Yost many unique opportunities and insights into his Bujinkan training. In addition to regular training with this dojo and seminars, Yost travels to Japan frequently and continues training with Hatsumi soke, Nagato sensei and other shihan. The Bujinkan Dojo is headed by Dr. Hatsumi Masaaki, the soke (grandmaster) of nine Japanese warrior martial arts taught as Budo Taijutsu. These nine schools form the foundation of Budo Taijutsu: Togakure-ryu, Gyokko-ryu, Koto-ryu, Kukishinden-ryu, Shinden Fudo-ryu, Gyokushin-ryu, Gikan-ryu, Takagi Yoshin-ryu and Kumogakure-ryu. The Detroit Bujinkan Dojo is headed by Yost Fulton and is located 45 minutes northwest of Detroit in southeastern Michigan. "Training at our dojo is focused on unarmed & armed self-defense; our training sessions tend to be relaxed and informal, similar to how training is conducted in Japan. The primary focus is to allow students to learn our art through authentic and realistic training. Safety is always a priority in our dojo, and dojo members must actively work to keep training safe. Unsafe attitudes or actions are not tolerated. Being able to defend oneself, no matter the situation, is the first goal of our training. Through realistic and controlled training, students develop the ability to protect themselves, as well as those near by. However, Budo Taijutsu is much more than learning how to fight effectively; it is a complete martial art. Through this pragmatic training, students develop as mature and responsible individuals. Correct training of the body develops the heart and mind. Our ultimate goal is to become stronger and better people, able to protect our families and contribute to the well-being of our communities."
