bujinkan-indiaWelcome to Bujinkan India. Our aim is to create leaders based on the principles and values rooted in the Japanese Martial Art of Ninjutsu. These principles have been nurtured through more than 1000 years of warrior tradition, forged in battle and refined in times of peace. Hundreds of Grand Masters have kept these ideas and principles alive and today this responsibility is undertaken by the Soke Hatsumi Masaaki and his senior students. In the 3 years of our presence in India we have hosted international seminars in Bangalore with top European Shihan and students from India have travelled and trained in Japan more than 10 times. Indeed Bujinkan India has made it’s mark on the International Bujinkan map.

The programme followed by Bujinkan India has been designed by 15th Dan Arnaud Coursergue from France. This programme introduces the student to the optimal way of using his or her unique body by going through the basis techniques and weapons in a step by step manner all the way up to attaining a Black Belt.

We have an age limit of a minimum of 12 years and no particular fitness level is required to start with. Men & women, boys & girls, advanced & beginners all train together in a relaxed atmosphere where the training is based on the individuals’ capabilities and what is necessary in order to get to the next level.

Aches, pain and bruised egos are part of the game and we demand commitment and dedication from everyone who is accepted as a member of Bujinkan India. It takes a special kind of person to endure and at the same time learn from the hardship of training.

We believe that Bujinkan Ninjutsu can be for anyone but is not for everyone. When a person is accepted as a part of our programme, that person starts the long and winding road to freedom of movement.

Soke mentioned once that we must create our own language, our own way of moving (this is of course after many many years of training) - since we all are differently build we must accept that we cannot move the same way.

We have adopted this same logic with regards to leading a dojo. We see it as our task to impose a solid base and inculcate the principles and values in all our students without the use of rigid discipline and force. These principles and values must flow freely from the instructors and grow inside every student and come to life naturally over time out of a desire to abandon egos and become better human beings.

Nikolaj, from Denmark, has been living in India for nearly 5 years and is a 10 th Dan Black Belt. He started training martial art at the age of 8, beginning karate and finally choosing to pursue Ninjutsu from 1998. He goes abroad several times a year to teach and train. Already this year he has been to Japan, France & Denmark to improve his knowledge and understanding of the art.

“My aim for India is to pass on as much knowledge as possible to as many good human beings as possible in a sustainable manner. We need to meet quality with quantity, technical knowledge with technical skill, martial growth with individual growth. I want Bujinkan India to be a place where one can overcome ego and fears and become better human beings by enduring and persevere the hardships of martial training” - Nikolaj Kielland.

Ninjutsu is a multifaceted living history of Japanese combat and military tradition. Nin translates into Endurance & Perseverance and Jutsu can mean art, giving us the meaning of Ninjutsu as Art of Endurance & Perseverance. This implies that it is more than just a way of fighting or defending ourselves – it is a way of living life.

Ninjutsu is a Martial Art and not a Martial Sport. There is no winning and loosing, no medals to win. Ninjutsu is a way to train oneself to persevere and be happy in life. Through the training in both armed and unarmed combat, students learn to adapt and respond to any situation in any environment – a skill that can certainly be used in life.

Soke Hatsumi Masaaki is the Grandmaster and head of Bujinkan – the association that brings together the nine schools of Martial Art namely: Shinden Fudo Ryû, Kukishinden Ryû, Koto Ryû, Gyokko Ryû, Takagi Yoshin Ryû, Gikan Ryû, Gyokushin Ryû, Kumogakure Ryû & Togakure Ryû.

In 1999 Soke Hatsumi Masaaki received the International Culture Award from the Japanese government for promoting cultural exchange through Martial Art. A couple years later, in 2001, Hatsumi Sensei became the first Martial Artist to be awarded an Apostolic Blessing by the Vatican, signed by his holiness Pope John II.

In 2007, Soke entered the list of Japan’s 100 most influential people in the arts category for his continuous work in promoting cultural understanding and preserving an ancient Japanese legacy through Martial Art.

Bujinkan Ninjutsu is not just a fighting system, it is a way of living life and Soke’s teachings trickle far beyond the sweat and pain in class.

There are no rules as such for training in the Bujinkan. There are some guidelines and what you can call some rules of thumb. Soke is the absolute authority and as there are no governing body of the Bujinkan common sense and correct attitude is the best way to bear yourself in the Dojo. In the past many have claimed association to the Bujinkan and a few have not behaved properly. Bujinkan India is not a moral police or judge of good or bad behaviour. What is right for you may be wrong for another person and vice versa. We are all different and we must accept that as natural. Soke has laid down some guidelines, so if you can comply with these, then you should have what it takes to train with us.

There are many questions and many answers. Both of these are theoretical in nature and Ninjutsu is best understood by doing. We have classes throughout the week. Come and give it a shot at one of our Dojo. All you need is a pair of track pants, a teeshirt and a pair of socks and you can train. Be on time and come with an open mind and heart and if you still have questions after your tral class we’ll be happy to answer them then.

In both May 2007 and 2008 Sheila Haddad from Germany came to India to teach and train with us for a full week. Sheila is a specialist in training women and travels the world extensively teaching women how to protect themselves. Sheila Haddad is now coming back again in May 2009 for more Girl Power.

In September 2007 a good friend of Bujinkan India 11th Dan Cavin Pietsch spent a week with us. Cavin attitude to life and commitment to training is something that inspired us all while he was and keeps motivating us after he left. He will be back soon too!

Recently, in February 2008, 15th Dan Arnaud Cousergue visited us to give us the direction of this years training theme. In the week that Arnaud taught us how to train safe and keeping in mind that we live much longer today than the warriors of yesteryear. This translated into a completely new vision of teaching and training aiming at perfection in all movements and gave birth to this new version of our website.

During 2008 we have gone to Japan, France and Denmark to train and teach. It has truly been a year of travelling and movement. A year of inspiration and new beginnings. We are going to celebrate Soke’s birthday very soon in Tokyo and will update our site with new pictures and quotes from this trip.

When I met Soke in April this year (2008), Soke said that India has many beautiful things and has given birth to wonders like yoga and the Karma Sutra. We both laughed and Soke told me that many wonderful things would happen to Bujinkan India.

India this year saw the promotion of our Assistant Instructors Shiva Subramanian & Preetam Satish both to 3rd Dan Black Belt. The highest rank held for any Indian in Bujinkan Ninjutsu. Congratulations to them and to India. We are now at the end of 2008 and many marvellous events have come and gone. I hope you will take the time to go through our site and maybe even come and see us at one of our Dojo.
