lance-kummShihan Lance Kumm was born in the year of the Tiger. He has been involved in the martial arts for over 25 years. He started his martial arts training in Santa Barbara studying Tang Soo Do. At Cal State Long Beach he studied Shotokan and Hwa Rang Do. In 1992 Lance started his training in the Bujinkan where he studied under Kevin Millis at the Shibu West Dojo in  Irvine, California. He travels to Japan at least once a year to train with Soke Masaaki Hatsumi and other senior instructors.

Lance has a B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Long Beach State and holds three patents in the field of Neuro Surgery.  He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the American College of Sports Medicine. Currently he is Vice President of Sales for a metal fabrication company.

Bujinkan is unique. It is not a sport or just a fighting art but is a true martial art so effective it has been studied by the Navy S.E.A.L.’s, British S.A.S., Israeli Special Forces and other elite combat units. We train for actual life and death conflicts not competitions. In a real self-defense situation there is no second place, no referees, no rules and no trophies. What works on the Tournament mat may not work on the street, and what works on the street is often “against the rules” in Tournament competition.

The Bujinkan houses nine ancient Japanese warrior traditions utilized by the Samurai and Ninja. Each school has its own specialties ranging from the Ninjutsu school, Togakure Ryu which emphasizes escape and evasion to the Samurai school of Koto Ryu known for its bone breaking techniques. These martial arts lineages and schools of strategy are full self-protection and self-defense systems that are as viable today as they were when they were created.

Our teaching methods are based on the K.I.L.L. principal. Keep It Learnable and Likeable. At Bujinkan Anaguma Dojo we create an environment that makes learning enjoyable. We do not resort to stern discipline or yelling when a student is frustrated. This only leads to more frustration and eventually the student quitting. We offer constant encouragement which leads to success instead of frustration.

Bujinkan is a true warrior tradition and we work to be a part of its transmission and preservation. We keep up to date with current training in Japan by traveling there at least once a year to train with the Grandmaster at the Honbu Dojo. We also have instructors, who currently live and train in Japan, out annually for seminars.

Physical prowess or previous experience in martial arts isn’t necessary. All you need is a willingness to learn. Please enter the training with an empty cup and a light but earnest spirit. Above all, we want you to enjoy training, maintain your health, and follow your heart.

Bujinkan Anaguma Dojo of San Diego, CA is not just another Martial Arts school. The Bujinkan is a collection of nine martial traditions unified by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, the 34th soke (or grandmaster) of the Togakure Ryu Ninpo, an 800 year old ninja art form.

The goal of  Anaguma Dojo is to create a positive and fun learning environment where students can delve into the mysteries of the ancient warrior traditions and apply them to modern self-defense.  The guiding principles of our dojo can be drawn from the words of Toshitsugu Takamatsu-soke, the thirty-third linear Grandmaster of the Togakure Ryu:

“The essence of all Martial Arts and military strategies is self protection and the prevention of danger. Ninjutsu epitomizes the fullest concept of self-protection through martial training in that the Ninja art deals with the protection of not only the physical body, but the mind and spirit as well. The way of the Ninja is the way of enduring, surviving, and prevailing over all that would destroy one.”

Our training has two sides - traditional studies and modern application (e.g. swords aren’t generally carried around and flashlights weren’t invented yet - you’ll learn more about this when you start training with us).

We welcome good people at all skill levels. All people of good character are welcome!

Looking forward to seeing you!

Lance Kumm, 10th Dan
